Arbroath Pippins

We are a very small group who met at a Scotland Land Trust meeting, discussing derelict land. We wanted to utilise vacant land to plant orchards for communities.

Arbroath has a long history of orchards associated with Arbroath Abbey and we have tried to plant apple orchards using local heritage varieties, including the Oslin apple which was cultivated by the monks at the Abbey. So far, we have planted 4 orchards in Arbroath and are planning on planting many more across Angus in the future. Although our trees are mere babies at the moment, in 10 years time we hope that communities will be able to educate their children about where food comes from and provide free food to people.

FOTRA (Fit O' The Toon Residents Association)

We are a community group, set up to care for the history, environment and wellbeing of our community.

We have engaged in a number of endeavours, including a circular stone bench to encourage folk to sit and chat, a Monday morning coffee catch up where you can have a free coffee/tea and cake and meet your neighbours and community. We are currently trying to arrange street lights for Christmas to brighten up the gloomy nights which can be hard for some folk. We have planted a large bank of coastal wild flowers for the past 3 years and are expanding into new areas of town. This has greatly increased the biodiversity of our area, and for the first time ever we had nesting house martins.

We are always looking for new ways to engage with our neighbours and look out for each other in our community.

Hospitalfield

Dedicated to contemporary art and ideas, Hospitalfield is a place to work, study, learn, visit and enjoy.

Hospitalfield is an artist’s house in Arbroath, with a captivating cultural and social history that spans many hundreds of years. Left in trust in 1890 to provide for artists and to support education in the arts. Today we run a contemporary arts programme that is anchored in the visual arts and responds to the demands of local, general and specialist audiences. We support the production of new work, new writing and provide space for debate and learning. We run an increasingly busy study centre facility which hosts events and residential groups. We have opportunities to be involved as volunteers within our arts programme, historical collection and archive and our garden.
