2288 Montrose Air Cadets’ Association

To promote and encourage among young men and women a practical interest in aviation and the Royal Air Force (RAF).

To provide training which will be useful in both the services and civilian life.
To foster a spirit of adventure and to develop the qualities of leadership and good citizenship
We are not a recruiting organisation for the RAF but if you’re thinking about a Service career, cadet membership will put you ahead of the competition. Many cadets go on to great success in the RAF (and the other Services). Around 40% of officers and 50% of all aircrew (including pilots, navigators and engineers) in the RAF now are ex-cadets. Research shows that they do better in basic training and stay in the Service longer than their colleagues. Likewise, if you chose a civilian career our research proves you can go on the great things…employers just love the skills and experience that air cadets offer.

Let’s face it – where else would you be given the opportunity to fly solo in a glider or powered aircraft when you’re 17? Whatever you do with your life, at the end of your time as a cadet you’ll be self-motivated, confident and ready for anything.

Gable Endies Men’s Shed (GEMS)

GEMS is a non-religious and non-political group so everybody can come in to unwind regardless of their views and background.

The Shed is a space for ALL activities.

Speaking to members of the community often there is an impression the Shed is exclusively a Joinery workshop, or that it is only for retirees. Nothing could be further from the truth. ANYTHING you can imagine doing can be done within the Shed. Woodworking can of course be done, as can Metal Working, Glass Blowing, Computer Skills, Electrical and Mechanical projects, basic Automotive refurbishment and Repair right down to board games and sewing. What do you want to do?

The Shed can also be a place to start a new hobby or sport. We will try over time to build an inventory of equipment to use for various activities.

Montrose Community Trust

Montrose Community Trust leverages the appeal and context of football to drive impactful initiatives across four core areas: Attainment and Achievement, Participation and Performance, Environmental Empowerment and Welfare and Wellbeing.

We tackle inequalities and provide support to those facing challenges such as unemployment, poverty, ill health, dementia, isolation, addiction, and disability.

Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre

The Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre aims to show the human side of the Air Stations past with a collection of contemporary photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. These not only tell of the history of the airfield but also the story of the men and women who served there and those who lived in the area. The Heritage Centre ensures that future generations will remember their service.

We are an independent, fully accredited, museum run entirely by volunteers and in 2014 we were proud to receive The Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award for volunteer groups in the UK.

Montrose Heritage Trust Bamse Project

This is the tale of Bamse, the huge St. Bernard dog who lived during the 2nd World War. Bamse was owned by Captain Hafto of the Norwegian Navy, and went to sea with him on the minesweeper Thorodd during the war. He achieved legendary status in Montrose, Scotland, where the Thorodd was stationed, as tales of his adventures, courage and kindness spread.

The Bamse story was brought to the attention of the Montrose Heritage Trust by Mrs Henny King. As a member of the Montrose Port Authority board she first heard about some of the exploits of this huge St. Bernard dog during the Second World War from Captain Johansen, the then harbour master.

With the dog having died and been buried in the town she felt that even the few details that had been recounted made a wonderful story that would be excellent publicity for Montrose.

Montrose Museum

The museum is designed to look like a true ‘temple of learning’, with Ionic columns on either side of the doorway and ‘museum’ written above the lintel in elegant gold relief. Inside the beautiful neo-classical building a series of displays are housed in the spacious atrium, mezzanine and galleries charting the life of the town and art of its people.

It is now part of Angus Council’s museum service and the displays and collection have evolved from the eclectic wonder-shop that it was in the nineteenth century whilst retaining the atmosphere of a traditional museum. It is now very firmly locked in the heart of the community.
