Angus Council Community Based ESOL

Angus Council Place team have opportunities for volunteers of all ages and walks of life to help students attending  their English evening classes to improve their English skills.

The ESOL Buddy Project is designed to give volunteers from the local community the opportunity to meet a student from another country and learn more about their life and culture. The student gains the opportunity to improve their spoken English skills and better integrate in the community, progress at work or to further education.

Typically the volunteer and the student meet once a week for about two hours in a public place – a café or library – at a time that suits them both for a chat about their lives and families – a ‘blether’ as we would say! There is no need to know another language or be a grammar expert. The project is run to improve informal English and strengthen contacts in the community.

We have opportunities in Forfar, Arbroath, Brechin and Montrose.

Opportunities also exist to volunteer in the classroom as a teaching assistant. This has helped many volunteers gain the experience they need to follow on from a TEFL qualification or similar.

Countryside Learning Scotland

Countryside Learning Scotland, we aim to improve awareness of and access to the extensive opportunities available within the rural sector and businesses to all secondary school children in Scotland. Through delivering in-school engagement sessions, hands on rural career days in the workplace, teacher and industry staff training, residential experiences, and rural industry partnerships for further work experience, we show that there are opportunities for everyone, regardless of academic ability or additional support needs.

This takes place through the “Pathways to Rural Work” initiative, a progressive programme that increases awareness of and access to rural opportunities, qualifications, training and careers to help reduce the attainment gap through providing better school to work transition opportunities for pupils and students from all backgrounds and abilities.

As the only countryside education charity in Scotland specialising in the secondary sector and across all rural industries, we are in the unique position to do this. Our vision is to work regionally across Tayside in partnership with local grassroots community groups, local countryside employers, schools, NGO’s and colleges. The long-term aim is to create a sustainable future for Scotland’s environment through engaging young people with the countryside and its social, health & wellbeing, economic, and environmental benefits.
